iGroove SXT iPod Speaker
The world is not lacking iPod speakers right now. The choice these days is enormous.
So when you’re looking for a reasonably priced portable/home speaker dock you’re not going to struggle to find one.
But there have been quite a few manufacturers jumping on the iPod speakers bandwagon in recent times. Some have punted out a range of basic plasticey boxes, that do produce a sound, but they certainly don’t put much thought or quality in to the sound performance.
For quite a while now the Klipsch iGroove has been one of the most popular portable/home iPod speakers on the market. Accessibly priced and a great performer.
But now Klipsch have updated and upgraded this speaker favourite and brought out the iGroove SXT. Is it a basic plasticey box?
In short no. Thank the lord. Not another one.
The IGroove SXT is a compact speaker dock, measuring just 4.75 inches tall by 12 inches wide by 4.6 inches, but is a funky looking piece of kit. By no means just a plasticey box.
There are just three buttons on the speaker dock itself; Power, Volume Up and Volume down and this pretty much sums up the iGroove SXT. Simple, but very, very effective.
In many ways it takes a Bose like attitude to building iPod speakers; all its efforts go on the sound.
The iGroove SXT is not entirely featureless, it has GSM shielding so there’s no interference of the sound from your iPhone, a handy Instant wake functionality when using your iPod’s alarm clock feature and a little credit card sized remote control that helps you operate the basic functions of the system without moving from the couch. But the sound is where they’ve put the effort in.
For a smaller home unit, the iGroove SXT comes armed with some serious sound goodies including dual 2.5-inch woofers and 3/4-inch MicroTractrix™ Horn-loaded tweeters – the Horn-loaded tweeters are a Klipsch speciality and really bring the sound to life.
These goodies are what puts this iPod speaker ahead of most of its competitors. They give the iGroove SXT oodles of sound and I mean lots of it. It gives a lot of volume for its size and thanks to the Klipsch technology; there is almost no distorting of the sound even at maximum volume.
But its not just volume that makes this a good speaker dock; it’s the quality. The bass is warm but precise and the upper ends of the sound profile are clear and crisp without being at all tinny. Overall it is a very impressive sound and not just for its size – if this sound came out of a speaker which cost half as much again, you’d be very pleased.
VERDICT – This speaker could have done with a nice display and maybe an FM radio, but these are small gripes and all forgivable. Ultimately, this is good looking, has a fantastic sound and is very good value.
